The skin is the largest organ on the human body and it is also where we often see difficulties that alert us to severe dangers. One of the ways that the skin may give such a warning sign is in the form of a rash. Although some rashes are nothing to be concerned about, if you see a round rash with a white ring around the center, making it look like a bull’s-eye, you should head straight to the doctor.
A bull’s-eye rash is characteristic of Lyme disease and it occurs in approximately 80% of all cases where Lyme disease is a problem. The disease itself is caused by a type of bacteria that is quite ancient. In fact, it has been found in ticks embedded in Amber from perhaps millions of years ago! It may even have been an issue for the Iceman, who is thought to have lived over 5000 years ago.
If Lyme disease is caught early, it is a treatable problem. If it is not treated, however, it could lead to severe and debilitating problems, including pain in the joints and back. Don’t fool around with this type of rash, make sure a doctor is alerted immediately.
